WORKING WITH GOUACHE
Opaque, Reworkable, and Endlessly Bold
Gouache sits in its own category between watercolor and acrylic \u2014 water-reactivatable like the former, but fully opaque like the latter. That opacity means mistakes aren't fatal: a layer can be painted straight over once dry, which makes it forgiving for artists still building confidence with color mixing. It also dries to a flat, matte finish that photographs beautifully, part of why it's become a go-to medium for illustrators and editorial artists. The gallery above shows a range of approaches, from loose color studies to tightly rendered illustrations, using gouache's core techniques: wet layering for soft transitions, dry brushing for texture, and flat color blocking for graphic impact.
